Social Issues

Identity issues

One of the main topics of my film opening relates to multiple identity disorders, mentioning the human’s dark side and partly influenced by Freud's theory of the id. I have researched a lot into the dark side of a human, how we can have different personalities, and how we could act differently in situations.

Freud's theory of the id in psychology

Sigmund Freud’s theory of the id talked about the complexity of human personality, that our personality is composed of 3 elements: the id, the ego, and the superego. It is the component that is unconscious and includes instinctive and primitive behaviors. Even though Id is the only part of a human being that is developed since birth, as we grow, it gets hidden by the part of our personality called the ego. The ego is the idea that humans act acceptably and is the personality that is responsible for dealing with the real world. As our id gets hidden and covered up, tension and anxiety will occur, leading to humans finding their ways to fulfill their desires. Freud’s theory of the id is the premise that builds up my idea and helps me to develop my character.

Human dark side

The human dark side is one issue that could be spotted in my opening film, especially in the scene where the protagonist looks at herself in the mirror. It is stated by Psych Central that humans all have a ‘dark side’ and that we often prefer to hide it, when our dark side develops into a larger part of our personality, it can easily dominate us and take over ourselves, which is the situation that the protagonist is in. After a long time of suppressing her emotions, the dark side slowly takes over her thoughts and actions, leading her to be unable to control or remember what she did when she was led by her dark side.

Dissociative identity disorder (DID)

Multiple identity disorder was what my protagonists suffered from in the opening film. The medical term for the disorder is dissociative identity disorder (DID) and according to the Cleveland Clinic, it is when people have 2 or more personalities that control their behavior at different times. The disorder can cause memory gaps, anxiety, delusion, and disorientation. DID is considered very rare and only affects between 0.01 and 1% of the population, Females are also more likely to be diagnosed with DID than males. The cause of the disorder is mainly the result of physical abuse during childhood or past traumas. All the symptoms and causes of the disorder relate to the protagonist in my opening film, where she suffers an identity crisis, unable to identify her real self. The character was also bullied in school for years and was abused by her classmates, causing her to develop dissociative identity disorder. Her disorder was very serious which even led to her murdering her bully.

Overall, the 1st social issue that I mentioned was a combination of different topics related to personality change and the different sides or personalities of a person. In the end, the major social issue that was the most dominant throughout my 2-minute opening sequence was dissociative identity disorder (DID) while the dark side and Freud’s theory were mostly for inspirational purposes.

Mental health issues

Based on the background of the protagonist, the social issue of school bullying and mental health problems was also mentioned. This is a severe problem, especially in Vietnam where based on the World Health Organization (WHO), the rate of suicide in 2015 was 5.87 per 100,000 population, which is mostly caused by depressive disorder. In 2023, the Vietnam News stated that 14 million people in our country suffer from mental health issues, taking up 15% of the whole population. Despite the situation, Vietnam only has 143 clinical psychologists and psychotherapists and clinical psychology services are not officially covered by health insurance. This affects patients who suffer from depression, anxiety, and other disorders as they are unable to seek help from experts.

School bullying

While there are multiple reasons leading to mental health problems, school bullying is one of the causes of the issue. The  Ministry of Education and Training reported that every year, there are approximately 1,600 cases of school violence and in 2023, the number increases 11% compared to 2022. All of the data showed that bullying is a serious issue in Vietnam and there are a lot of victims yearly. These victims would face traumas and mental health problems that will affect their after-school lives. The psychological effect of bullying, especially during the school year is depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and self-harming behavior. There are multiple causes to why students bully each other but most of the time, it is because of the difference between one another. For instance, the student could be bullied since they have different sexuality, appearances, religion or due to having a disability.

Recently in Vietnam, based on Tuoi Tre (Youth) News, there 2 serious cases of bullying that eventually led to the death of the victim, caused by the bully. It is also stated that more female students are getting involved in bullying in recent cases, even though male students are still more dominant. In my opening film sequence, the death of the bully went against the normal situation where the bully is the person who attempted the murder. This is one of my intentions because it is a way to alarm the bullies that their actions could lead to the victim’s suffering and they could take revenge. This is the case that happened to the protagonist in “Who are you?”, where she had suffered so much in school when she was bullied and ended up murdering her bully.
