Project Overview

This is a quick overview of what I have been working on throughout the year for my foundation portfolio. Each area of production has been documented in more detail further down the blog. 

WHO ARE YOU? is a media film opening sequence product, which is a part of the AS Level Media Studies project for the Foundation Portfolio Coursework component. This is a long-term project that started in September 2023, before ending on April 19th, 2024. The final product, WHO ARE YOU? is a 2-minute film opening sequence, that belongs to the genre 'thriller'.

 

"I personally enjoyed watching movies with protagonists who suffer from a psychological disorder and I wanted to produce one of my own. Therefore, WHO ARE YOU? is not only a normal film opening sequence but it represents my 'dream-like plot' for a psychological thriller movie. I hope that through this first step of producing a 2-minute opening sequence, I will be able to direct a full-length version of WHO ARE YOU? in the future." - Anna, the director.

Genre: Thriller, Mystery

Logline: An amateur investigator who suffers from dissociative identity disorder investigates a murder case without realizing she is the main suspect, and slowly figures out her true identity as well as the real murderer of the case. 

Synopsis

WHO ARE YOU? follows the journey of an amateur female investigator, Nadine, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, as she agrees to investigate a murder case without realizing that she is the main suspect. 

As the story progresses, she slowly figures out the truth behind all the nightmares she has been experiencing and the altered identity that has been controlling her actions.

"Who are you?", Nadine wondered as she looked in the mirror and saw her high school self.

Title Ident

Despite already having a chosen font for designing the pitch, I wanted to have a different title ident to use for the ending of the 2-minute opening sequence that will be more unique and specific to the thriller genre. I was lucky that during the time I was planning to design my title ident, I got a new iPad which helped me to edit and design it better. The app that I used was Procreate and I decided to look up fonts and typography that I believed would work best, and then draw it with the colors that I wanted. 

In the end, I have my top 3 favorite fonts which I tried to draw and see which would be the most suitable to use. At first, I really liked how the font Demon Night looked but it didn't really have the bloody effect that I was looking for and it was a bit too formal. Unquiet Spirits was another font that I think might work but in the end, it looks very weird and is also hard to rearrange due to its curvy shape. Therefore, I decided to choose Painted Mess as the typography for my title ident and to make it more suitable for the thriller genre, I chose the color red and black as the background color, emphasizing blood and helping to make the font stand out more. 

I looked up the typography on Pinterest and because it doesn't have the link to download to import as a font, I have to use Procreate to draw the letters based on the picture and change it to the color I want. Furthermore, I have attempted to make the title ident have a depth, therefore I added shadows and highlights to it. 

In the end, this is the final outcome and I'm not 100% satisfied with it since the question mark in the ident is missing but I think that it is still good enough, and most importantly, it is suitable for the thriller genre of WHO ARE YOU?. The above ident has a transparent background that could be used on top of the last scene before it completely fades to black. The below ident is how the title ident would look at the end of the 2-minute film opening sequence with a black background that creates contrast.
