Question 1 - How does your product use or challenge conventions?

My [Question 1] critical reflection was divided into 2 parts, 1 is the breakdown of the technical and symbolic aspects of WHO ARE YOU?, including the inspiration and explanation for some of the intentions in it. The video is around 30 minutes long and you can watch it down below. Please feel free to adjust the speed of the video There are 2 other sections to the question where I discussed the uses and challenges conventions of my 2-minute film opening sequence and media theorists that I got influenced by.

Below is my presentation about the uses challenges conventions of my 2-minute opening sequence. If there is a showcasing problem, please click here for a better view. For slide 12, there are 4 videos with sound so feel free to pause and watch each of them separately for a better experience.

Rough Cut #2

Sound Design

What I have tried to do

  • Added in the atmospheric sound to set the atmosphere
  • Attempt to replace the original audio of the breaking news in the footage by editing it and matching the action of the character with the information mentioned in the news
  • Use a variety of sounds and layer them to make the scene more realistic

What needs to be improved

  • 0:00
    • The sound of rain is too sudden so it could be adjusted to fade in from low volume to higher volume
    • The sound of rain is a bit too hard to tell and could replace it with a different audio
    • Still, a murmuring sound in the background so might want to replace it with a quiet ambient sound
  • 0:15 - 0:25
    • Footsteps are heard to be a bit fast compared to the walk so might need to adjust the position so that the audio matches the action
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    • The sound of thunderstorms seems to have  cut a not flowing smoothly so a tension sound could be added before the thunderstorms continue to overlap the cut
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    • Blood splashing and stabbing action sound too fake and should consider lowering the volume for a more realistic effect
  • 0:32
    • Heavy breathing is a bit too loud which sounds weird and the volume should be lowered down
  • 0:44
    • There is a cut in between the 2 shots so should only use the sound of one footage and duplicate it for the next footage to have a smooth effect
  • 1:07 - 1:33
    • The background music of the breaking news is too loud so needed to be smaller
  • 1:40
    • There is a discontinuity of sound when the scene cuts from a wide shot to a close-up of the character's shoes
  • 1:48
    • The sound of the housekeeper cleaning the classroom got caught so would need to replace it with an ambient sound

What I will do next

  • Sound Design
    •  Improve the audio of the shots according to the above section
    • Add in tension and dramatic sound effects
    • Add in sound effects during the transition of shots
  • Transitions
    • Add in match cut, dissolve cut, and glitching transitions
  • Title ident
    • Add in the title ident of the production company
    • Add in the credits for the director, actor and the final title ident of WHO ARE YOU?

  • Black jacket (Jenny)
  • Vinschool uniform shirt (Jennie)
  • Uniform skirt (Jennie)
  • Shoes (Jennie)
  • Exacto knife (Sofia)

My Responsibility

🤵‍♀️ Director: As the director of my film, I am involved in every stage of production process and is responsible for all the creative decisions.

📽️ Camera Operator + Cinematographer: I am responsible for operating the camera for all the shots, setting up the camera for each shot according to the storyboards, and being mindful of the picture and sound recorded. Any technical issues on set will also need to be taken care of. It is also important that I need to maintain all the equipment borrowed from the school.

Personnel

👩‍🎓 Nguyen Vu Khanh Nhu (Jennie): Actor for "Nadine" & "Anne"; Assistant Director

Jennie did an exceptional job at acting for both Nadine and Anne, she was able to fully showcase the differences in personality of the 2 identities and the results exceeded my expectations. Besides being an actor, she also contributed to giving critical suggestions and ideas about the camera shots or additional ad-libs that helped to fully convey the idea to the audience. Jennie was also very professional on set and I'm very grateful to have her as both the actor and assistant director.

🧑‍💼 Luong Nhat Minh (Potter): Assistant Director & Lighting Operator

Potter was also a media student, so having him on set on both production day 1 and day 2 is very helpful. Aside from capturing the behind-the-scenes moments, he also suggested ideas to help improve the shots which was very useful. Another important role Potter had on set was a lighting operator, which is especially needed to create a lightning effect, which he carried out successfully. I'm very grateful that he agreed to help me out on both production day that happens at school, despite me only asking a few hours beforehand.

Challenges

  • Sound from the choir who is practicing downstairs
  • Continuous changes in location
  • Continuous changes in outfit
  • Handled movements
  • IPad seen in the frame during a scene where an exact match cut is required
  • The timing is too rushed
During the filming in the hallway, a choir practice was happening at the time and we didn't really notice the notice until we rewatched the footage and the sound got caught in the shot. There was nothing we could do about the sound as apparently, we couldn't know exactly where the sound came from or the purpose so we couldn't force them to stay silent for our filming, therefore we just accepted that the sound would be heard in the footage. However, I believe that I could remove the sound during post-production so it is not so much of a worry for me. As for next time, I could wait for when the choir is taking a break to film which could avoid the sound getting into the footage.

The 2 most challenging parts during production day 1 were not technical problems. Still, it is how Jennie had to change 3 outfits during the 2 hours shoot while I needed to constantly move the tripod and camera to 3 different locations in the school, which cost a bit of time. Since we were filming after school time, it was hard to stay at school late so I was trying to be efficient with all the filming and make up for the time lost due to outfit and location changes. In the end, despite having 15 more minutes to reshoot any footage that I was not fully satisfied with, we were already warned by the teacher to leave before 18:00 so we just decided to wrap up the shoot and stick with what we already got. For improvements, I think I could have an additional day to reshoot all the footage that I'm not really satisfied with to improve my film.

The first day of filming was the most chaotic during the 3 days as it was my first time filming so a lot of details changed during the filming process. In the end, I decided to do most of the shoot in the hallway by handheld movements rather than using a tripod since I felt like the idea would be better conveyed and since I had not tried it during the experimental shot day, it takes a lot of shot to nail it and takes some time as well. Moreover, my height was a lot shorter than Jennie so I also struggled to film her at a higher angle which caused the footage to have a bit of a shake. Next time, I would have tried more options during the experiment to fully be ready for any changes when the official shooting day came.

One mistake I made during the staircase scene that frustrated me the most was when I left my iPad on the staircase during the first shot where Jennie was wearing a detective outfit and I took it out when Jennie changed into her uniform, which leads to the 2 scenes not being identical in the surroundings. As I wanted to match cut the 2 shots, I was really angry at myself for not carefully checking the surroundings and it is a lesson learned for the 2 other production days. I also can't force Jennie to change her outfit again to reshoot so I just stick with the footage that I already have. I think that to fix the mistake, I could use the surroundings of the later footage and try to match cut Jennie in both outfits only, not the full background. I don't know how it will turn out, if not, I might have to accept the fact that it will be there as a mistake and can't be removed but next time, I would be more aware of what got caught in the frame.

Lessons learned

  • Be extra critical about the shots that need to match perfectly. Remove all unnecessary props seen in the frame.
  • Always observe the whole frame while rewatching, don't only observe the object but also the surroundings.
  • Always leave a few seconds before pressing stop filming the scene.
  • Always check the storyboard to see if any shot or scene is missing. Check for camera shots, camera movement, and all the technical details before filming a scene.

Storyboards

Despite already having a main storyboard, I have decided to create a production storyboard used for the filming day. I believe that summarizing the storyboard helps me, Jennie, and Potter know the shot list better and add any additional details to make the film flow smoothly. For the storyboard for production day 1, I also considered the time to film in each location, such as filming at the staircase first since windows are seen and I wanted the scene to be in the morning so it is filmed first. The hallway scene is set to be late at night so I have filmed it at the end, after the bathroom scene.

This is one of the additional scenes that I planned to add but in the end, it is too hard to film as I can't set up the camera so that I could film Jennie's face due to the sink and it is too risky to climb above the sink so I decided to not film it and ignore this storyboard.

Experiments

Experiment #1 - Fake blood

Before the filming day, I experimented with the fake blood to avoid any risk of ruining the school's infrastructure during the filming process. All the fake blood was bought online through a website called Shopee, and the total expenses spent on the fake blood are noted on my main database, the Expenses page here. Or you could refer to them through the pictures attached on the right.

The main reason for this experiment was to:
    1. Test the color of the blood to see how realistic it is and if additional mix is needed
    2. Test the consistency of the blood to see how well it drip
    3. Test how the blood will stain both on hand and on a smooth surface
    4. Attempt to create the letter with "REVENGE" written in blood

Below is a vlog of me experimenting with fake blood. The video is approximately 18 minutes long and there are parts where I already sped up the speed to make it shorter. I also wanted to note that the video is very chaotic, I tried to be professional at first but since I was having too much fun with all the fake blood, I gradually became more energetic throughout the process. However, there are a few time stamps where I concluded all the information from the experiment so you might want to check it out first if the video is too long.

    1. 05:15 - 06:06
    2. 08:51 - 09:29
    3. 10:03 - 11:00
    4. 17:49 - 18:35

Experiment #2 - Blood drip

Before production day 2, I also carried out a small experiment to see how I could attempt to create the murder scene, where the blood drips down from the knife. The experiment was not planned so I was just casually in my bathroom and attempted to use a cup with some water and observe how it could drip down the knife. This is because I think that creating a scene using shadow would need a lot of work since we would need a very strong light that could reflect the shadow clearly, while also making sure that only the needed subject is in frame. Therefore I decided to change my idea 2 days before filming day and decided to experiment with it to see how practical the idea is.

You can view the process of my experiment with blood drip below. The video is approximately 5 minutes long so feel free to increase the speed if needed.

Rough Cut #1

Continuity

What I have tried to do

  • Assembled all the shots together into one sequence.
  • Successfully kept it under 2 minutes.

What needs to be improved

  • 0:20 - 0:22
    • The footsteps don't seem to match 100% so it needs adjustments
  • 0:28
    • The flow of the previous scene to this scene doesn't flow smoothly since their is a slight pause before the action so the 2nd clip could be cut down
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    • The duration of the footage needs to be adjusted to bring in more tension, could either be longer or slower
  • 0:49
    • The duration of the clip is a bit too long so it doesn't match the upcoming action of waking up
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    • The action of breathing hard and looking up at the door doesn't match so adjustment in duration is needed
  • 0:51
    • The panning motion to the door seems rushed so could adjust the speed to make it slower
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    • The footage is a bit too long and the letter doesn't stand out so might need to consider adjusting the duration and zoom in to focus the letter
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    • Could adjust the speed or duration so that the footage lasts longer to emphasize the meaning of the scene and raise tension
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    • Consider adjusting the speed for the panning action to be faster and cutting down the beginning of the footage to have the time for the addition of duration from other scenes
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    • Adjusting the speed of the footage or zooming in for the audience to read the text message easier
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    • Zooming action is too quick so could adjust the speed of the footage to slow it down and emphasize the character's emotion as well as to raise the tension for the ending of the 2-minute film opening sequence

What I will do next

  • Continuity
    • Improve the continuity of the shots according to the above section
  • Sound design
    • Add atmospheric sound (rain, thunderstorms, ambient white sound, ...)
    • Add in detail diegetic sound (blood splashing, screams, footsteps, doorbell, breaking news, ...)
    • Ensure that all sound flows smoothly without cuts in between

[Day 2] Experimental shot - Hallway section

Day 2: Hallway Section

📆 Date: Tuesday, January 30th 2023

⏰ Time: 08:00 - 09:00 (I hour)

📍 Location: Vinhomes Central Park, Home, Living room

👤 Personnel: Anna, Jennie, Mary, Sofia

🎥 Equipment:

  • Camera: Nikon D5600 (School's)
  • Tripod (School's)
  • A pen (Sofia)

Challenges

  • Lack of time
  • Have to do the experiments silently
The initial plan for the experiment for shots at school was the after-school period. However, since Jennie is not free after school, I have decided to do some experiments during the 2 media periods that I have on Tuesday morning. Therefore, I have a time limit of 1 hour 30 minutes to do any last experiment before the filming day on Wednesday the next day. Moreover, since the experiment is during school hours we need to be out in the hallway to shoot, and we have to be very quiet, ensuring that we are not affecting any classes studying. Mary was with me at first when we were experimenting so she actually acted according to her character Joselyn. I also asked her to be my actor for a few other shots and replaced Jennie's place. Unexpectedly, Jennie had a free period during that time so she passed by to help me with the experiment while Mary left for her work. In the end, I can do some really helpful experiment shots, which help me speed up the process for the official filming day.

Lessons learned

  • Always experiment with the shots first before the actual shot. Turning the storyboard into life takes work. Sometimes, it would not turn out the way we intend it to, and that’s completely normal. We just have to improvise and find what works; experimental shots help with that.
  • Over-preparing is always better!

Behind the Scenes

There was actually no behind the scene footage for the experiment shot in the hallway section because we actually forgot to film it 🥲 And because I used my iPad to look at the storyboard (since we are not allowed to use the phone in school), therefore no footage of the behind the scenes are captured. 😭

[Day 1] Experimental shot - Home section

Day 1: Home Section

📆 Date: Saturday, January 27th 2023

⏰ Time: 08:00 - 09:00 (I hour)

📍 Location: Vinhomes Central Park, Home, Living room

👤 Personnel: Anna

🎥 Equipment:

  • Camera: Nikon D5600 (School's)
  • Tripod (School's)

Challenges

  • No actors during the experimental section
The experimental shot at home was only planned after I was able to borrow the camera and tripod for the official filming so I was not been able to contact Jennie early enough, hence she is not with me when the experiment is carried out. However, since it is only an experiment, I felt like the most important factor is how the shot and composition came together. Therefore, I tried setting up the camera at the location and angle according to my storyboard and for shots where camera movement is needed, I tried to practice the movement and get familiar with it, so that it could save a bit more time during the official production day. Besides not having the actor with me, the experiment turned out well and I have a better imagination about how the final outcome will look.

Lessons learned
